KANSAS CITY, Mo.
-- A dog attacked a Kansas City
mail carrier on his daily route
Tuesday, KMBC's Peggy Breit
reported.
The postal carrier was heading
toward a mailbox at 78th and Main
streets, when a 100-pound Akita
broke free from its porch chain and
attacked, officials said.
It took several minutes for officers
to get control of the dog.
"The dog's usually inside or in the
backyard. Well, today the dog was
chained to the porch on a small
chain, then it broke and attacked
the carrier," said Mark Inglett,
with the U.S. Postal Service.
The injured postal worker was taken
to a local hospital.
The dog's owner was taken into
custody because she refused to sign
citations in connection with the dog
bite, officials said.
Animal control officers said they
expect more calls about dog attacks
in the upcoming months.
"Seven to 10 bites a week is not
unusual this time of year going into
the summer," said Michael Simmons,
an investigator with Kansas City
Animal Control.
