Current Italy Information -  What I have been told in an email is that things are better now.  They are down to 17 breeds of dog defined as dangerous and have special requirements (insurnace, kennels and muzzles).  A copy of the law (in Italian) can be read here.   The list of dogs deemed dangerous:

Because I don't read Italian to confirm the above is accurate I have left the original information below.

Around 2003 Italy passed BSL against 92 breeds of dogs.  The BSL varies by breeds, some are banned some are restricted.
