OTHERorganization

Canine Corner and Puppy Playground, both in CR, made a trip south and brought back dogs that would not be reunited with their owners. Fosterers are 100% responsible for follow-up care and alterations. Only 2 PBs (young) were brought back, and I am fostering/handling both. So I am an independent foster of Katrina dogs, but I obtained the dogs through two organizations' united effort to rehome them. I am affiliated with the Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa (address below), but fostering these two PBs is NOT an AWF-sponsored project.

NO.animals

I think this means permanent animals and foster animals. 4 permanent dogs, 2 foster dogs, and 2 permanent cats.

GeneralInformation_

I am a single-income homeowner working as a freelance writer. My income is erratic, there's little "extra," and the upkeep of my house (built in 1898) eats up a large portion of what comes in. I spend much of my time doing volunteer work (foster coordinating, organizing and staffing events, processing applications, checking references, etc.) for the Animal Welfare Foundation.

DIAGNOSIS

Franny needs to be spayed--ideally before she goes into her first heat. My vet has agreed to do the procedure at cost (approximately $65), and I have already made the appointment (Oct. 11th). Franny also has a hotspot at the end of her tail--she was crated quite a lot between rescue and my home, and she developed the habit of circling and chewing on her tail. She is not doing that anymore, but she does chew her tail when crated. My vet gave me a course of antibiotics, gratis, but the tail may need more attention. Any help for Franny would be appreciated. Please know that she will be spayed and receive care even if outside assistance does not become available.

VetQuote_

$65 for spaying No charges yet for tail injury

Prognosis_

The spaying should be simple. (I say it's urgent because I do not want Franny to go into heat in a multidog household, even with a crate-and-rotate system. Nor do I want stray male dogs arriving at the gate. I want to get this taken care of now. Her tail injury is likely to take a month or longer to recover from. I'm concerned about that, very much, and would like to consult with my vet over time about how her tail is doing.

Tail injury (self-injury) outlined above.

2 from Katrina, but I am asking help only with the APBT

GeneralInformation_

I am an individual fostering a neglected female APBT or AmStaff (not sure which) rescued from New Orleans during Katrina. When I was in Tylertown, MS, doing rescue with Humane Society of Louisiana, I saw Honey, who had been brought in the night before. She was found on the street with no owner information. She showed obvious signs of prior neglect and mishandling (severe emaciation, severe whipworms, skin infections, heartworms, use as an outdoor breeder) yet had the sweetest disposition in the world (loves people, dogs, and cats -- slightly bone aggressive, but who isn't). I wanted to pull her and ensure she had a good home. I contacted Ami Brooks, who I believe is involved with your organization, and she said she could find a foster home for one gentle female. However, to date, such a home has not been available, and I am fostering her and paying for all her vet bills (boarding while I went down to rescue again). I have no money and cannot even get my own dogs shots updated, so I pray PBRC will help. Ami said your fund was established to help needy girls like Honey. I would also like to post her somewhere safe for possible adoption. And I really need a foster home, too, as I travel quite a bit and cannot afford to board her during foster.

DogLivingArrangements

Since September 15 when I brought her back.

S2

Not yet -- I don't know how to do all this.

DIAGNOSIS

Has heartworms and will need treatment. The vet I see is trying to get a low-cost plan for this. In the meantime, she is on Heartguard. Needs to be spayed but is in heat right now. Her whipworms and skin infections are cured, and her ringworm spots are growing back with the help of oral and topical medication.

SHELTERduringTreatment

If neceesary. Prefer not.

Comments_

If I can get a 501C tax receipt for my expenditure, I will be OK with that. I was encouraged that it would be fine to rescue this dog from Katrina, that a foster home and help with payment of vetting and boarding would be no problem, but I see now that this may not be the case. I cannot spend ANY more vet money on her -- I have to get my own animals vetted, and unfortunately will have no choice but to have this gentle angel PTS if I cannot get some assistance with the situation. I am on the Atlanta rescue lists and have put out calls for help and foster care to no avail. I cannot understand why no one else sees the beauty in this baby girl.

Two Pit Bulls from Gonzales - Lamar-Dixon shelter facility in New Orleans. They are both Katrina survivors.

GeneralInformation_

I was laid off from AT&T after 35 years. I am now on a fixed income and would like financial assistance to help get these boys vetted. I received both Vito and Cappicino on Sunday, October 2, 2005, from the President of All Dog and Cat Rescue Angels when she returned from her trip to New Orleans with five Pit Bulls from Lamar Dixon facility. I took Vito and Cappicino and she has the other three. Vito - 3 year old male Pit Bull. Tri-color. Vito was heartworm tested and came back "POSITIVE". Would like assistance with vaccines and heartworm TREATMENT. Vito came to me already neutered. Cappicino - 10 month old Pit Bull. Chocolate and white. Would like assistance with neuter and vaccines. "Chino" tested "NEGATIVE" for heartworms.. YEAH!!!!!! Both dogs were already microchiped at the Lamar Dixon.

DogLivingArrangements

Both Cappicino AND Vito are living in my home as foster dogs. They will be with me until Vito gets through his HW treatment, which may take several months. Cappicino will stay with me for a while to relax and acclimate himself to a new environment. I will have him neutered, etc., and then put him up for adoption. I have no planned time frame for putting them up for adoption. Just whenever I think they're ready.

S2

They can not be put up for adoption until after October 15th, 2005, in order to give their families a chance to reclaim them.

DIAGNOSIS

Vito was tested and is heartworm positive. He will need vaccines and heartworm treatment. Cappicino tested negative for heartworms. He will need vaccines, heartworm preventative, and to be neutered. On October 5th, 2005, Vito and Cappicino were heartworm tested, given a rabies shot and had fecals done, by Dr Sue Trinh, Town and Country East Vet Clinic. 1100 Mount Bethel Road, Marietta, GA 30062. Phone number 770-565-5602. Nothing more was done during this appointment other than what I stated above. Both dogs were microchipped at Lamar Dixon.

4 personal dogs; 3 cats. And approximately 10 foster dogs in total.

Comments_

I foster for the Southern Hope Humane Society, which manages Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta, GA. I also foster for All Dog and Cat Rescue Angels. As a rule, I normally do Dalmatian Rescue but in the past several years, have branched out to take in mixed breed dogs/puppies and also Pit Bulls. I would appreciate any financial support you could afford me in taking care of these two awesome Katrina survivors. I was not planning on taking two as I have other fosters, but since I had the room, and love Pit Bulls, I opened my home to both of them. I was just not prepared for the additional expense at this time, especially Vito's heartworm treatment. In the past 4 months I have had to pay for heartworm treatments for six of my Dalmatian fosters. Needless to say, I am still trying to recover from those expenses. I was hoping Vito would test heartworm negative, but he did not:( Thank you.

Hi Gals. I'll be able to cover any treatment he might need, but right now I don't have any money and this boy needs to be neutered! This clinic is my vet's office. I did call the local humane society clinic for a quote, too, and they only came in slightly lower than my vet after the discount, so I'd rather contribute more myself to the bill and know that Gulliver is in good hands. Obviously I'll be abstaining from any votes on this case :). I'll make the appointment as soon as I hear either way from you (hopefully I can get him in at the end of this week). Please use my work email address listed above for any correspondence about this, since that's the email that I check during the day. Thanks!

GeneralInformation_

I traveled to Mississippi to the Best Friends Organization to help with animal rescue. There was a pittbull that arrived from Lamar Dixon and was very sick, unable to walk. In the week that I was there, he was neutered and had his left eye removed. The eye injury we believe came from the storm. I applied for foster care and was able to bring the little fella home. Sice returning from the vet on 10/22/05 he has been diagonosed with sycroptic mange and heartworms. He is going in for his first heartworm treatment on 10/27/05. As for the mange, he is unable to receive the injection treatment and therefore needs to be dipped once a week for six weeks. I do have another dog at home that has now been exposed to this contagious disease. She no longer is able to go to the park and has to stay home due to the risk of infecting other dogs. I also am having to wash bedding and linens everyday to contain this infection. I am a single individual living and working in Washington DC. I decided to take this animal home because he need a place to re-coup with the eye surgery and beening so weak. I haven't even had his teeth looked at, which are broken off in the front. The vet informed me that we will be seeing a lot of each other with the many conditions this little guy has. I live paycheck to paycheck and have a mortgage to take care off. I am not asking for a lot of assistance, but a little would help. We are already at $250.00 and he hasn't even started with the treatments. I am afraid that my personal dog will become sick and then that means double.

DogLivingArrangements

The agreement i have with Best Friends is to foster for 90 days. After that 90 day period and the owners have not located their pet i then will make a decision to either find him a loving home or adopt myself.

GeneralInformation_

Hello, I am a full-time volunteer for a humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization. Our headquarters are in Lake Charles, LA. After Rita hit, I began caring for 8 stray dogs that were lost in the storm. I have reunited all but one with their owners. The remaining dog is a wonderful, sweet NON AGRESSIVE pit-bull. I need to place her in a good home. She is about 2 years old. She would make a very good pet, but she does not like cats. She passes most of the Canine Good Citizen test without any training. I do not get paid for the work I do for the poor. Fostering this animal was a choice I made since I could not bear to let her wander in the streets. She is being treated for heartworm and I plan to have her spayed as soon as she is heartworm negative. The total for this bill is about $300 (the vet is giving me a discount). Please help or advise me in any way you can. Thank you, Joi Jaasma

Comments_

I'm sure the system is greatly burdened at this time. I have found a donor to cover up to $300 dollars of healthcare. My main issue is FINDING A HOME for this dog. Buttercup was probably left behind by evacuees who were scared and in a hurry to leave. Rita has really devastated our community and I don't know why the owners haven't come to claim her, but I am hoping to find her a new home where she is appreciated for the wonderful creature she is. I appreciate your help, assistance and guidance. Sincerely, Joi Jaamsa

I own a grooming and boarding facility in Cedar Rapids, IA. I went to New Orleans, and Tylertown and Hattiesburg, MS, as part of a rescue group from CR. We brought back several PB and Pit-mixes who, due to evidence of fighting, overbreeding, long term abuse or neglect, were designated for rehoming.

NO.animals

2 male PBs, 1 female PB, 1 female Rott, 1 male Husky mix, 1 male Cocker (all Katrina rescue dogs)

GeneralInformation_

All the dogs listed above except one are Heartworm-positive. Most have additional complications. I am committed to obtaining the vet care necessary for these rescue dogs, all of whom are making good progress in convalescing. A PB-owning/fostering friend suggested I apply to PBRC for assistance, which would be greatly appreciated.

DogLivingArrangements

First, I want to clarify why Scarlett has not been spayed yet. She is heartworm-positive (stage 3), and the vet recommended waiting several months until the treatment was completed or at least well underway. Scarlett lives at my boarding/grooming facility. She cannot come home with me yet because she's on forced bed rest for the heartworm treatment and a previous spinal fracture that became inflamed after HW injections near the site. (There are 7 permanent dogs at my house--she would not get to rest there.)

S2

Not listed yet due to physical condition(s).

DIAGNOSIS

1. Heartworm (stage 3) 2. Spinal fracture at vertebra 6, which was near the site of the heartworm-treatment injections and became inflamed, a condition for which Scarlett had to be hospitalized (Iowa State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in Ames). 3. Adrenal tumor (found at Iowa State during hospitalization) ---Scarlett's prognosis is good, and her physical condition has already greatly improved. She appears to have been used as a bait dog (abcessed bite wounds, signs of overbreeding, multiple scars), despite which she is very loving and sociable with all other dogs and cats and people.

The treatments are going to be up there in price as HWs are not prevelant in Tucson. We are two people doing what we can for the breed out of our own pockets. We only ask for a $100 adoptiong fee and not once have we broke even with an adoption fee and what was put into the dog to get it adoptable.

GeneralInformation_

I volunteered with Noah's Wish in Slidell, LA for a week. I ended up driving home, instead of flying, with a rented car to take the two girls home with me to foster. The car rental alone cost me $700. I've already taken care of their vaccinations. The lowest price I could find for both of them to be spayed is with my vet. They are offering to do both for $97/each, not included the cost of medication. We have four dogs of our own and there is no way we can keep them, but we will hang onto them, nurture them and love on them until we find them a home that we feel comfortable with. It will really help us out financially if we could get help with the procedures. Thanks in advance.

136 Katrina animals received from Lamar Dixon. 83 dogs, 53 cats. of the 83 dogs - 60 are Pit Bulls

GeneralInformation_

Over fifty of the dogs have tested positive for heartworms and we are attempting to treat a variety of other medical conditions including ringworm, skin problems, bleeding masses, untreated fighting and/or hurricane injuries to name a few. Only a handful of the animals are spayed or neutered. We are focusing great efforts on reunification and have reunited fifteen pets with their owners. Seven additional owners have been located and cannot take their pets at this time so we will continue to care for those till they can be reunited. We are following leads and locating additional owners every day. The Humane Society of Tulsa is a relatively small organization. We have been blessed with a dedicated staff, board of directors and volunteers working every day to care for these animals. Due to the lengthy time needed to locate and reunite the animals prior to adoption and significant needed veterinary care – our financial resources are stretched to the maximum.

DogLivingArrangements

26 are in foster homes 9 are in a boarding facility (paying daily for boarding and care) 12 are being held in plastic crates at our adoption center. 5 we paid to fly to New Hampshire SPCA 4 we paid to fly to their owners 3 had to be euthanized for extreme aggression Although we were only obligated to hold these animals through Oct. 15th we are attempting to hold them through Dec. 31st to reunite them with their owners. We have located five owners that will hopefully be in a position to take their animals back by December 31st.

S2

All pits are listed on petfinder.com, for owners to locate them.

DIAGNOSIS

50 are heartworm positive. We have already performed initital immiticide treatments on 17 of them. We have the immiticide donated from Merial to do the remaining animals but need money to hire a relief vet. to administer the injections. We have altered 9 of the pit bulls currently in our care by using the vet who comes in to do our regular adoption animals. We would like to spay and neuter each animal before it is returned to the owner or adopted.

SHELTERduringTreatment

Yes. We are a no kill organization. Our plan is to hold all animals until Dec. 31st to attempt reunification. After that, we will place them for adoption.

my focus for the donation is to treat cecil for heartworm. funding for the other two would be wonderful but understandable if funding is not available. we are a very small group with only two of us footing most of the vet care as adoptions can be very slow and most adoption fees don't cover everything. luckily i have a wonderful vet who works well with us and allows us to have treatments done wihtout paying the entire bill up front (after all he does know where i live!!!) But having to much on our tab can make for a stressful relationship. thank you for your time and consideration!! keep up the great work for this breed

GeneralInformation_

We are asking for help as we are an all breed cat and dog rescue that does specialize in the adotion of pit bulls. We are needing help as our adoption fee is not going to nearly touch what the vet bills are going to cost to get these guys healthy and ready for adoption. We already have vetted 4 of the 9 Katrina dogs that we are placing and are looking for help with the new arrivals.

Five of the Katrina dogs arrived yesterday, we are currently working on getting them UTD, chipped, altered and HW treated. The dogs have not all been tested (in the process) but they all are suspected of being positive. One of the past Katrina rescues possibly needs entropian surgery.

GeneralInformation_

I took in a dog from New Orleans, but with my own pets and my non-profit salary, I can't afford too many extra expenses. I was hoping to take on all of the vet bills after the first assistance, but then my car broke down and needed over $500 in repairs.

DIAGNOSIS

After his initial fecal test, Gulliver was treated for roundworm (all of my dogs needed to be treated after that, too). Once the roundworms were treated, tapeworms became evident in his stool. He needs meds for the tapeworm, plus heartworm preventative that will also help control other worms and prevent a roundworm (or other) relapse.

Help with this bill would be much appreciated! He needs to be taken care of, both so he can start gaining weight and be more comfortable, and to protect the rest of my animals. The timing of this was not good for me with my car repairs, so I'm hoping if this gets bill taken care of, I can start saving up for any tests I may need to run next month to search for a medical reason for his housetraining issues.

Ghost was A MS Katrina victim brought from an SPCA to a foster in Va. It fell thru and I took him at the request of Leah at Spindletop Refuge. As we couldnt find him another placement b4 I had to go back to work, he is being safely boarded at my local kennel at $10/day. He is also heartworm+ and deaf, totally untrained. I just spent $1100 on another Katrina pit and though I have done some fund raising for Ghost, I only came up with $150. He needs transport to Houston so Leah can work on training and placing him. The sooner he can go, the less the board bill. I may be able to comp the favor at some time in the future. I drive truck but cant take any dog that needs to be crated.

GeneralInformation_

The reason I am asking for help is because a Pit Bull mix from the Gwinnett Animal Shelter in GA was pulled on January 6th, 2006. Bianca was VERY pregnant. In fact, Officer Smoot, an Animal Control Officer for the Gwinnett Shelter called Patricia Siems and asked if our organization would take her. She was ready to deliver puppies any day. She gave birth to 8 puppies the day she was pulled. Sadly, 5 of her puppies died but I have the mama and her remaining three little girls, who are just about 6 weeks old now. Since I have Bianca and her babies, I was wondering if PBRC would help me at least with the cost of her spay. Especially since I will have her 3 babies to spay in another couple of weeks.

DogLivingArrangements

Bianca will be with me until her babies are weaned and she is healthy enough to be spayed, chipped and put up for adoption. I'm looking at about two more months, possibly more. She was also diagnosed with Sarcoptic Mange which we are treating now.

S2

Not yet. She has health issues right now. It will be a couple of months before she is healthy and ready to go.

DIAGNOSIS

She gave birth to 8 babies but lost 5. The three remaining pups are doing beautifully. Bianca has Sarcoptic Mange, which I am treating. When she is healthy, I will have her spayed, etc.

I have one

GeneralInformation_

I am fostering a dog from Katrina and the dog was given to Where Angels Run then the dog got brought into another rescue here in Va. Misunderstood Pit Bull Rescue run by Sara Meehan. I was asked to foster this girl and I did since October of 2005. She has had since then bouts of very bloody diarrhea and vomiting I have taken her to several vets for opinions ( out of my own pocket) and once she was so bad took her to an Emergency vet. The vets all concure on one thing that she needs to be tested for Addison's disease and I am unable to pay for that test which is around 400.00 dollars. I have asked sara on many occasions to help with this and she wants to put her to sleep and not pay for the test. Desiree (where angels run) is helping out with advice as much as she can and told me to contact you guys to see if we could get funding for her test. This is truly an Emergency situation since she has started vomiting blood and I am unable financially to give any more out to her I just want to get her better so she can go to her forever home.

I just wanted to thank you for your time in reviewing this matter. this is our only hope to find out what is wrong with her. Her real mother tied the leash around her waist diring Hurricane Katrina ( I am assuming as to not seperate the two of them) unfortunately her human did not make it in the storm, and when they found little Fawne she was still attatched to the leash and her deceased human, The rescuers said that she did not want to leave her human and that she kept trying to go back to her and nudge her to get up. She has adjusted fairly well here with me and i know when she goes to her forever home she will continue to heal from her scars and loss from the storm. Thank you Again for your time Angela O'Connell and fawne

I only have 1 foster dog now...she was in Misunderstood Pit Rescue, but the director of that rescue was not taking care of the dogs, so I took her out of the rescue in hopes I could rehab her and find her a good home.

GeneralInformation_

This dog was an abuse case from Brooklyn, NY and Misunderstood Pit Rescue took her in when she was released from NY ACC. She had many broken bones, including L7 vertebrae, sacrum, right hip, and torn Achilles tendon in right rear leg...Misunderstood did not contribute to the vet bills, or care of this dog, that has been with me since she arrived in Virginia in October 2005. My vet did extensive xrays to determine the extent of her injuries, bills to date $608.81. My vet wanted me to wait to spay her until her back injury, healed before she got spayed...so she will have been on crate rest for 6 months on 3/31/06. She still needs more xrays and spaying...

DogLivingArrangements

Yes, she has been in my foster care since 10/05.

S2

Was on Misunderstood Pit Rescue, now on PBRC

DIAGNOSIS

Shattered L7 vertebrae, fractured sacrum, fractured right hip, ruptured RR achilles tendon...(she was thrown from a 3rd floor window in Brooklyn in 9/05 by her owner, and was taken to Brooklyn ACC, where she stayed for a month waiting for ASPCA to push forward animal cruelty case).

Comments_

I was the Foster Coordinator for Misunderstood Pit Rescue at the time I pulled Hope (her name was Blackie) from the Brooklyn ACC. At the time, I was told her injury was probable broken hip or pelvis...she had not been evaluated during the month she was at ACC as they did not have xray machine. ACC released Hope finally after the abuse charges were not pursued against her owner. When Hope arrived in VA, I immediately took her to my vet for evaluation, and found all these injuries...Misunderstood did not pay for any of the vet care (or anything else for that matter), and I decided to take her out of the rescue, so that she could have the quiet time to recover, without being forced to go to adoptions when she was in pain. She is a great little dog, good with all my dogs, horses and cats, and I will find her a wonderful home. Vet evaluation at end of this month will tell me what special needs she will have, if any. I am applying for some help, as I am very strapped for cash now.

GeneralInformation_

We continue to take in Katrina dogs - 13 in February 2006. The heartworm treatment and lack of facilities nearby that provide free treatment really has compromised what small budget we have. Danae, our one pittie was HW+ (as were 11 of the 13 dogs we took in Feb) and we're just looking for whatever help we can get to offset some of the costs. Danae's heartworm treatment cost us $180 Her boarding, which was minimal cost us $24 Those are her only expenses thus far - however multiply that by 10 other dogs (many of whom were boarded much longer) and you can see where we are. AND of course, while treating them for heartworm, they can not be adopted out (NH requires a health certificate on all adopted dogs, and a HW+ dog can not receive a health certificate).

He is the sweetest pitt bull you will ever meet, we rescued him from some one who was feeding him food every couple days, and left him in a room for the first 6 months of his life. He also was covered in flees, had mange from head to toe (he looked like raw meet). When we got him he was skin and bone and was behind in growth and we doubled his weight. We love him to peices and want to find him a good home so ha can live a long healthy life and would really be great full if you could help yo. Thanks for you time

Four

GeneralInformation_

My boyfriend Matt Wildman and I spent several thousand dollars of our own money on four trips to New Orleans to assist in the Katrina rescue effort. On behalf of several rescue groups and shelters in NY and the northeast, we drove back a total of 52 dogs and cats to be re-homed. Between October and March, four of the dogs were subsequently returned to us and we have been fostering and boarding them since. These are 4 wonderful dogs to whom we are completely committed to caring for until we find them permanent homes. Three pit bulls and one pit bull/chow mix. From 12/30- 3/4 we have been boarding one dog at $16 per day at a kennel in Queens, NY. From 3/4 - 3/17 we began boarding 2 of the dogs at $32 per day. From 3/18 we began boarding 3 of the dogs at $35 per day. One of the four is always at Matt's apartment. He would house more than one there but while the dogs are extremely great with people, they are not dog friendly. My apartment already has a rescued territorial dog and several rescued cats. From 12/30- 3/20 the kennel charged us $1545. Of that we have personally paid $472; City Critters, one of the NYC rescue groups we drove back animals on behalf of, donated $584 towards the bill. As of 3/20 we owe the kennel $489, plus $35 per day since 3/21. We pay for all their food, a crate, treats, coats, toys, leashes and collars, ID tags etc. We spend every weekend doing community outreach for the dogs, and weekdays doing internet outreach, pitching stories to local papers, placing ads in papers etc. We request a grant of $489 to help us pay our balance at the kennel. If there are additional funds available, we humbly request a percentage of the $35 per day for the 3 dogs we must pay as of 3/21 until we find them homes. We can supply references as to our situation and care of the dogs from local rescue groups with whom we work (see "Additional Comments" at bottom).

DogLivingArrangements

As per above, one returned dog has been in Matt's apartment since October 2005. Subsequent to that dog's return, 3 more dogs have been returned and have been boarded to the present.

S2

3 of the dogs are listed on Petfinder in the lost Katrina pets section; the fourth was an owner surrender. Two are also listed on two NYC rescue groups' sites, with more site listings to come. We are putting up our own webpage soon where we will list all the dogs.

DIAGNOSIS

3 of the 4 dogs have heartworm and we are having them treated. We have secured free vet care and treatment for all the dogs by Dr. Andy Kaplan in NYC who has a fund for Katrina dog vet care. We are not asking PBRC for vet care funds, only for boarding funds as stated above.(Dr. Kaplan does not have long term boarding facilities.)

SHELTERduringTreatment

Comments_

We are completely committed to finding these 4 dogs responsible, permanent loving homes. We screen very well, check references, do home visits etc. We began assisting in the Katrina rescue effort as 2 individuals on behalf of several rescue groups locally as well as voluntering for HSUS, ASPCA etc. We are still involved as these 4 dogs were returned and we are committed to them unitl we find homes. We just need some financial assistance as we have paid thousands of dollars already starting with the 4 trips to NO. Our boarding fees are now $489 that we owe plus the $35 per day that adds up quickly! This is a discounted rate by the kennel. You can contact the following people as references who know our situation and can discuss it with you. Holly Staver, City Critters, 212-822-2241, www.citycritters.com Carly Shulman, Pet Adoption League of NY, 631-499-7082 The dogs are 3 pitbulls: Sweetie, Momma and Bubba, and one pit bull/chow mix named Rusty. OTHERorganization

I am a foster parent for a Katrina Dog originally through this rescue. The president of this rescue has abandoned these dogs in her care and members of the organization and fosterers are filing complaints against her. Our foster dog is now considered our dog. He was brought here to Virginia from Where Angels Run in Arkansas and he was supposed to have been neutered, had his heartworm treatment and x-rays, etc. We obtained him before Christmas and he finally received heartworm treatment but now we can't get him neutered without bloodwork, chest x-rays to make sure he can go under anesthesia safely. We need help in getting the bloodwork, xrays and the neutering. We were told money was given to this woman at Misunderstood for all these services to be taken care of, but she has disappeared. You can confirm this with Desiree at Where Angels Run in Arkansas. We are not an organization, but WERE part of an organization so I wasn't sure what to check off or fill in here. The address and numbers given are our home.

NO.animals

We are owners of 3 dogs (including Patch, this Katrina dog and 4 cats

GeneralInformation_

Although we are responsible pet owners and have our pets vaccinated and well provided for,we would never ask for help if we could afford it so that funds could go to others that really need it, but right now, my husband is unemployed since mid-February and his profession makes it hard to find another job (pharmaseutical equipment sales) and I am on Social Security Disability. We want the best care for Patch and just because he had his heartworm treatment, we want to make sure that the treatment was effective, that he is heartworm free and all is well with him on the inside. The vet will not do his neutering without the follow-up work because they want to be sure there will be no problems when they put him under anesthesia. After he was sent here from Arkansas in October, he was (along with the other dogs under the care of this rescue group)supposed to have been treated immediately for his heartworm, had the bloodwork and Xrays done. As I stated above, we got him just before Christmas and nothing was done. He was very sick and even now, after his heartworm treatment in February, we had to take him back since he was coughing very bad. After giving him antibiotics and cough meds, he has done pretty good. So, all we ask, is for help with the bloodwork, X-rays and neutering. We don't take him out in public now (dog parks, walks in parks, etc), because he is un-neutered and we are always repremanded by people to have our dog neutered. We have worked with animal rescue groups in NJ and here in Virginia for 20 years now and we don't have to be told he needs to be neutered and it gets aggrevating to hear this. Plus, we want to be able to bring him out and enjoy himself after all the horrors he was put through during and after the hurricane. Misunderstood Pitbull Rescue is now defunct (sp) and the president is no where to be found. We were told she had the funds to take care of these animals so you might be hearing from alot of people from this group. If you need to speak to a former member, Edie Larson, regarding us and Patch and the group, you may contact her at 804-556-4862 and/or 804-539-7534. We thank you for any help you can give us. PS: We were told he had his rabies shots and Im sure it was done after his rescue in Louisianna but we don't have proof of that.

DogLivingArrangements

Since December 22nd, 2005 and his is still with us.

S2

We don't think he is listed for adoption. I haven't checked to see if they still have a website.

DIAGNOSIS

He was heartworm positive when we went to get him from the shelter he was at. He had his heartworm treatment in February of this year but nothing has been done further. We need to see that he is heartworm negative and free of complications that could arise during his neutering. Chest Xrays and bloodwork needs to be taken. A rabies shot also is needed since we have no proof that he has had one.

SHELTERduringTreatment

We were going to be his foster parents until his owners were found/or he was adopted but we have decided to keep him since we have gotten attached to him and the rescue group has since broken up.

We were told that $500 was allotted for Hurricane Katrina dogs who needed healthcare from Desiree at Where Angels Run in Arkansas (sorry, I don't have her full name or phone number right now). We were told that as a foster parent of this dog that all his treatments would be covered but since the groups president has disappreared, no one knows who to turn to to get help for any of the dogs. We are now involved in a group action to have her charged for abuse, neglect, etc. This can be verified through Edie Larson, her numbers are listed above.

I am the foster parent.

GeneralInformation_

I started fostering a wonderful Pit Bull from Misunderstood Pit Bull organization (out of Richmond, VA) on February 5,2006 but they had neglected and abused the dog I recieved. He tested positive for heartworms immediately following the hurricane and never recieved treatment even though they had been given money to treat him from the original rescuing organization, Where Angels Run (out of Arkansas). Instead of getting him the medical care he needed, they put him in a kennel and left him for over 5 months, never getting him treated by a Vet. All the while, I had signed up with them in September 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit, to foster for them. I was not contacted until February to foster. I had no idea of what this dog had been through. I recieved a call from a recently resigned member of the Misunderstood rescue informing me of the true nature of situation. I contacted Gale at the kennel in Richmond, VA (AARF) and she confirmed all of the details. When I recieved him he was half his body weight, weak, and on the verge of death. I also was given the name and number of the organization, Where Angels Run, that originally rescued Caleb (formerly Callibus, my foster dog) and I was told that legally, since Misunderstood had failed to comply with the contract they had signed, Where Angels Run was still responsible for him and had actually been looking for him. I contacted Desiree Bender at Where Angels Run and she confirmed all of the above and she wanted me to get him into a Vet right away. She sent the information for a $500 AAHA voucher for the Heartworm Treatment to the Vet (Dr. O'Leary at (703)779-2903 for more information: http://www.oldmillpets.com/ and we started the treatment. As of right now, the bill is over the $500 voucher by $400 for the treatment he has already recieved, this already includes a Vet discount of 20%, and he still needs to be treated for Demodex(Mange) and he needs his last heartworm shot. All of this probably won't be too expensive, but it is all more than I have. They quoted me a couple hundred dollars roughly, I haven't gotten a written estimate yet. I never thought I would have to go through all this when I signed up to foster. Everything I signed said that I would not have to pay for these expenses. I am taking 3 college courses and I work full-time. I have another dog to take care of and I am in the process of moving, I don't have any extra money. I never recieved any help for ANYTHING I have had to get for him from either organization. He was allergic to the food he was on, so I had to get him all-natural food to get rid of his yeast infection, which is not cheap. I have talked with Desiree Bender, technically Caleb's owner, who has suggested me doing the rest of the treatment myself. I feel he needs professional treatment. I am desperate.

DIAGNOSIS

Heartworms- I would need $400 I am over for his treatment already (3 of the 4 shots have been given) and he still needs his last shot. Demodex (mange)- he needs a full treatment of daily oral ivermectin for 6-10 weeks depending on how well he responds to the treatment. Then he also needs a final check up to make sure it is all cleared up. I don't have any records for him, so he will need whatever vaccination shots are normally given.

I don't know for sure, it depends on how long he needs to be on ivermectin to get rid of the mange. At least $400 is owed thus far though.

Prognosis_

He will be in good health. He has no other problems.

GeneralInformation_

I would additional assistance with the last two Hurrican Katrina pit bulls. Isis and Buford are both from New Orleans. The two of them will be very hard placements since Isis can be very "irritable" and Buford must of been a chain dog that is learning manners. I ask for help in there continued housing, food, vet care, and support. Isis came into NOLA with very bad burned feet from the caustic waters and Buford was found at the end of chain presumed dead. He lived at the vet office until Dave took him home(to us)November 15th. Both dogs have made signicant improvement and will need additional time at our home to find the right home. We have faith in both dogs but know the road ahead of us is long and would appreciate help with future medical costs, housing, and food.

BOth dogs have been kept on meds, Heart Guard, temp housing, and love.

Sonic had a broken hip bone that I paid to have fixed, Marc Anthony has bad demodex mange on his back and was full of worms, Snuggles had to be fully vetted and working on socialization consider his x-owner was beating him every day, Momma Cass has been in rescue since last summer but kept up to date on all medical and Heartguard, three pit pups are coming in next week to be fully vetted, taking in Cain an abuse case from an inner city pound...the list is endless.

Comments_

I would appreciate help with the two "left over" Katrina pits. If funds are left over for the Katrina animals, I would love the help. Thank you for all of your support in the past and in the future.

OTHERorganization

I have rescued a neglected and ill pit bull that was roaming in my area. She was in much need of food and medical attention.

NO.animals

I own two dogs already

GeneralInformation_

I already have the expense of maintaining a home and two dogs of my own. Since the pit bull needed immediate medical care and boarding, both of which I myself could not provide it is getting expensive to take care of her till I can get her placed. She had a prolapsed rectum and uterus, probably from attempting to birth puppies. In addition, she needs to be spayed as soon as possible to assist in her recovery and recuperation. I need to continue to board her until placing her, which I have already started looking into. Unfortunately this breed is not easily placed so normal resources have not been available.

DogLivingArrangements

I already own two dogs so I cannot bring her home. I can board her at the vet's until Monday May 15th, when I have to make a decision on what to do with her. Unfortunately it takes time to place this breed and it is a weekend, which doesn't help.

S2

DIAGNOSIS

She has a prolapsed rectum and uterus, plus needs to be spayed to help her medical condition improve. The vet has already done what he can for the prolapse situations but has not spayed her. When coming out of the anesthia the dog threw up dead puppies so she was in pretty bad shape. I am assuming her shots are not up to date based on her overall condition.

SHELTERduringTreatment

No, I currently own two dogs.

In addition to financial assistance I really need placement assitance as well. In spite of everything, Lucky is a gentle affectionate dog that deserves a loving home. When I stopped to pick her up I called her out of the woods and she came right out, jumping over deep gullies and struggling to get to me. She layed her head on my arm while I rubbed her head and and she won my heart. Unfortunatly I own two dogs already and can't keep Lucky. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

GeneralInformation_

Hello, I am requesting funding for a Pitbull rescue that was rescued from an abusive situation. I currently own two dogs and they are not friendly with other animals. I have the dog currently at a friends house in a fenced yard and he is able to foster the dog for a month or two. I am hoping i can get some funding to get the dog neutered and to get his shots up to date and possibly some funding for food for him, so we can list him on the pbrc web site and on petfinder to find this dog a good home. please let me know if you can help us out. thanks for your time and consideration. The dog is behaving well with people and is more and more friendly everyday.

He is currently being fostered by a good friend, but he does not have a telephone or email.
